FAQ

1. What is Sport Études?

At Lester B. Pearson High School, Sport Études consists of students attending classes in the morning and participating in practices of their sport in the afternoon. They will be attending 3 out of the 4 daily classes at Lester B. Pearson High School.

2. Does that mean my child will be missing information to successfully write the final exams?

Sport Études student-athletes receive information in class at an accelerated pace. They are given the same amount of information as other students who attend regular classes to be able to write the end of year EMSB and/or MELS exams.

3. What type of student would be successful in the school portion of the program?

The student should be mature, independent, and responsible. Potential candidate should be not shy to ask teachers questions when they do not understand something in class or as homework. He/She should see their teachers in advance or immediately after returning back to school from being absent (competition or sickness) to get any class material and/or class work. This will insure the students’ ability to keep up with class work and maintain the academic requirements.

4. What sports have student-athletes participated in while being in the program?

Archery, Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Cycling, Diving, Fencing, Figure Skating, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Karate Kickboxing, Soccer, Speed Skating, Swimming, Synchronized Swimming, Table Tennis and Tennis.

5. What are the requirements to be accepted by the Sport Études program?

The following steps need to take place:

a. Meet the requirements of the sport.

 For baseball, hockey, kickboxing and soccer you must tryout with our team coaches.
 In the remaining sports, the student-athlete will need to have the potential or be classified as either “espoir, relève, élite, or excellence” by the sport federation and have a coach to train with during the Sport Études hours.

b. Meet the academic requirements:

 Secondary 1 student must write the school’s placement exam.
 First term and previous year’s report card should show academic success and good behaviour for all students applying to the program.

Contacting the Sport Études Coordinator as soon as possible in the new school year is very important to make sure you successfully meet all of the registration requirements.

All student-athletes need to meet the requirements of by both the sport and academics to be accepted into the program. The Sport Études program is a partnership between the sport and the education.

6. Is there an placement exam for the program?

Only students wishing to try out for the program in Secondary One need to write the placement exam. No exceptions.

7. What is the next step if you meet the requirements of the sport to get into the program?

All new Secondary One students will need to write the Lester B. Pearson High School placement exam on November 12th. A photocopy of the most recent report card must be submitted to the Sport Études Coordinator before the exam. After evaluating the report cards and the exam, the student will receive a letter to advise them if they have been accepted, put on a waiting list, or if they have been refused by the program.

For Secondary Two to Five, we would need to see your current and previous year's report card.

8. What types of mark are you looking for from Sport Études students?

 75% and higher overall average
 70% and higher in English, French, and Math
 No failures

Students who do not meet our academic requirements will be placed on probation and need to fix the problem prior to the next evaluation period.

9. Can I participate in two sports in the same year in the program?

The training times for Sport Études athletes make it next to impossible to participate in two sports. You could train or participate in a second sport but it would have to be done outside of the Sport Études hours.

10. Can I take high/advance Math and Sciences in Secondary 4 and 5?

Yes if you meet the school’s requirements for acceptance into these subjects.
