Fine Arts

Dance Curriculum

The arts play a vital role in preserving and expressing the cultural values of society. In this course, students will acquire the knowledge of the basic fundamentals of dance.  Students will learn different dance styles and techniques.  Historical background is incorporated within the course to enrich students understanding and learning. 

In Cycle I, students are involved in activities and studies that will contribute to the development of their competencies in Dance.  Students will be introduced on learning the routine, basic dance steps and positions of selected dance styles as well as learning how to develop personal choreographies.  This art form will be continued in Cycle 2 (Secondary 3), where students can expand on their learning and creativity by focusing more on the development of their own personal dance choreography using the skills previously learned.


Media Studies Curriculum

The arts play a vital role in preserving and expressing the cultural values of society. This is a credited course offered to Cycle 2 students introducing them to the study of media as a mode of information, the roles that technology and techniques play in developing media, as well as media’s involvement in their daily lives.  This course will allow students to discover the role that media plays in society, and offer them the opportunity to appreciate, critically analyse, evaluate, and design various forms of media using different modern media equipment. Students will explore and gain hands-on experience using different media by learning to integrate various computer applications with other media tools.

 

Drama Curriculum

The arts play a vital role in preserving and expressing the cultural values of society. The aim of the drama program is to foster the students' discovery of their own creativity and of modes of adaptation to this rapidly changing world. Students are given the opportunity to experience a variety of ways of expressing themselves in a range of dramatic contexts. 

In Cycle 1, students are involved in activities and studies that will contribute to the development of their competencies in Drama.  The course is designed to increase perception, proficiency, and control in the use of dramatic elements such as: concentration, visualization, movement, voice, speech, sound, design creation, and listening skills. 

In Cycle 2, this art form is offered as a credited course, where students can expand on their learning in the skills previously learned.  Focus will be on: improvisation and warm-up exercises, vocals, motion/movement/expression, scriptwriting/playwriting, and theatrical production.


Visual Arts Curriculum

The arts play a vital role in preserving and expressing the cultural values of society. The objective of the Visual Arts program is to provide students with the hands-on opportunity to be creative and express themselves through the creation and construction of two and three-dimensional work using a variety of mediums/media.  Students will develop the ability to observe, describe, analyze, interpret, and make critical judgments about the form and content of art.

In Cycle 1, emphasis will be placed on the learning of technical skills through an understanding of the basic art elements and principles of design. Students will be encouraged to be creative and develop their ability to solve and resolve artistic problems. Students will develop communication skills through a critical inquiry of their own work, that of their classmates, as well artists who will be studied in the art history component of the course.

In Cycle 2, students will gain an understanding and appreciation of different artistic and cultural heritage and the role of art in our contemporary society.  Students will learn and make connections to how art is reflected in their everyday lives, as well as its role in society and pop-culture.  Through the making of personal art projects, confidence will be developed as students learn to express their ideas about the direction of their work, and the true meaning behind it.
