French Curriculum

Cycle 1

FRENCH Core    New MELS Core    634-100/634-212
FRENCH Enriched (Late Immersion)*    New MELS Enriched 635-100/635-212

Two programs are available in French, Second Language, Core and Enriched, which lead to two different levels of certification.

These Cycle I programs aim at reinforcing and developing further the two communicative language competencies acquired in elementary school: to interact and to produce a variety of texts in French. A third competency, to read fiction and non-fiction texts, is added for the enriched program. Moreover, while learning French, the students are led to develop, through class activities, some Cross-Curricular Competencies. These competencies rely on the Broad Areas of Learning to guide students to reflect, not only on their personal lives, but also on the major social issues.

FRANCAIS langue d'enseignement (Post Immersion)    132-100/132-216

The Français, langue d'enseignement program aims to develop three competencies: lire et apprécier des textes varies, écrire des textes varies, communiquer oralement selon des modalités variées. Through reading of fiction and non-fiction texts and through the participation in cultural activities the student has access to the richness of the language and culture. Depending on the nature of the activity, the purpose of the texts may be to seek information, to discover and create fictional narratives, to formulate and justify an opinion, orally or in written format, in order to share it or confront it with that of others. Through the written productions the student also learns to reflect on the structure of the language.
Within this course, the students are led to develop some Cross-Curricular Competencies which rely on the Broad Areas of Learning to guide students to reflect, not only on their personal lives, but also on the major social issues

Francais, langue maternelle, local program (Post Immersion Sec III to V)    131-384/484/584

This course has the same format and the same type of content as Francais langue maternelle. The reading material, the individual projects, the topics of composition are as challenging, however the weighting for the oral, the reading and the writing strands is adjusted to take into consideration that the students require more time for oral communication.
Students begin taking this program at secondary I and generally write the French 634-414 in secondary II and French 634-594 at the secondary III to satisfy MEQ certification requirements and will, on successful completion of these courses, accumulate 8 credits.

French 314 (Post Immersion Sec II)    634-314 (Late Immersion Sec II)

The emphasis is placed equally on written and oral expression in everyday situations related to the students' ages, interests, and needs. While oral proficiency is very important, the students are also expected to be able to express themselves adequately and
correctly in written French.

French 414 (Post Immersion – Sec II)
(Late Immersion – Sec II)    634-414 4 credits/Secondary IV

The student is expected to be able to communicate in French with comparative ease and fluency, and will be exposed to Quebec and French culture and customs through the use of authentic written and auditory materials.
A careful study is made of the language itself: grammatical structures, vocabulary, elements of style etc., in order to ensure an acceptable level of accuracy in the language used.
Supplementary reading constitutes an important part of the course and the student is encouraged to read a wide variety of printed material.

French 594 (Post Immersion Sec III)    634-594 (Late Immersion Sec III) (4 credits/Secondary V)

The aims of French 594 are to enable the students to communicate adequately in a French environment, in situations relevant to their experience, age, and interests. It helps to develop a positive attitude towards French and motivates the students not only to use the language, but also to become familiar with the French-Canadian milieu. Written and oral expressions are of equal importance. There are texts and documents to be studied. The evaluation of the course is done through 4 "volets": oral communication, listening ("ecoute"), reading, and writing, each with its own code digits.

French 544 (Post Immersion, Sec. III)
French 544 (Late Immersion, Sec. IV)    634-544 4 credits/Secondary V

French 544 is a locally designed course. Its general aim is to continue the development of the 4 language abilities: oral communication, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and writing, but at a much higher level than French 594. However, the focus of the course is on reading and writing. The reading material is both literary and non-literary, consisting of authentic utilitarian documents, press articles, novels, short stories, plays, essays, etc. The written activities to be performed by the students are of an informative, narrative, or expressive nature.
Prerequisite: French 594

French 534 option (Late Immersion, Sec. V)    634-534 (Post Inunersion, Sec. IV) (4 credits/Secondary V)

This course is designed for the students who have completed French 544 before their final year of secondary education, and want to improve their ability to communicate in French, particularly in writing. This course has a strong Quebec socio-cultural content and offers 15 objectives (8 in comprehension and 7 in production) in which the written
communication is emphasised. These objectives are reached through the completion of projects chosen by the students and their teachers. Students in Post Immersion who complete this program in secondary IV will advance to Francais 486 in secondary V.
