Cycle 1 English Language Arts 632-100/632-212
The Cycle One Secondary English Language Arts program is first and
foremost a literacy program. It is based on the connection between the
student's world and the social purposes served by language and texts,
since language is both a means of communicating feelings, ideas,
values, beliefs, and knowledge, and a medium that makes active
participation in democratic life and a pluralistic culture possible.
The following program content is to be completed by the end of Cycle One:
- spoken texts: information-based, narrative-based, and dramatic and interpretive
- production, revision, and presentation of spoken texts
- examination of the aesthetic qualities of language
- media texts: print, visual, digital, and audio-visual
- production, revision, and presentation of media texts
- examination of the nature of media texts that communicate information, tell a story, or advertise or persuade
- reading: young adult literature, narrative-based, non-fiction, and popular texts in different media
- response to spoken, written, and media texts
- interpretation of text and literary and socio-cultural context
- written texts: action-planning-based, reflective- and interpretive-based, narrative-based, and information-based
- production and revision of written texts and reflection on the writing process
- development of style by applying knowledge of text structures, features, grammar, and linguistic conventions
- examination of voice, writer role, writer research, and audience
Cycle 2 English, Language Arts 630-316/416/516 (6 credits/Secondary IV and V)
The Secondary English Language Arts program is designed to help
students use language effectively, both in formulating their ideas and
in communicating with others. To this end, students are given the
opportunity to expand their use of language in a wide variety of
listening, reading, speaking, writing, and viewing situations.
